The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks- The language used throughout the book makes the reader believe that they did treat Henrietta differently because of the color of her skin. The language as well helps realize the severity of the issue and cancer in general as well as how immoral taking her cells were.
Doubt- a lot of loaded questions in the script. For example, Sr. James says she believes Fr. Flynn is innocent, and Sr. Al says “You do?” Babies- Language is big in this because there really is no language, but body language The Cathedral- There is no spoken language in this, just body language Ambiguity- doubtfulness or uncertainty of meaning or intention Ex. A good life depends on a liver – Liver may be an organ or simply a living person Denotation- the explicit or direct meaning or set of meanings of a word or expression, as distinguished from the ideas or meanings associated with it or suggested by it Ex. A dove is used to suggest peace or gentility Linguistic determinism- the idea that language and its structures limit and determine human knowledge or thought, as well as thought processes such as categorization, memory, and perception. Classification- the act of organizing by classes Ex. Kingdom, Phylum, class, order, family, genus, species Translation- the rendering of ones language into that of another Ex. From English to Spanish Communication- The interchanging of thoughts, opinions, or information by writing, speech, or signs Ex. Talking about our thoughts in TOK Connotation- the associated or second meaning of a word or expression. Ex. Home or place of warmth Stereotype- a standardized meaning of one thing based on a person’s look on the topic Ex. White guys can’t jump |
