"Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it."

Important QuestionWe have all heard the previous quote by George Santayana, "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it". Although it is a widely accepted quote, how true can it really be? Is a society truly more susceptible to repeating history if they are less knowledgeable about it?
Famous Historical QuotesHistory will have to record that the greatest tragedy of this period of social transition was not the strident clamor of the bad people, but the appalling silence of the good people.
Martin Luther King, Jr. I do not believe that women are better than men. We have not wrecked railroads, nor corrupted legislatures, nor done many unholy things that men have done; but then we must remember that we have not had the chance. Jane Addams |
Wider ScopeEven if one disagrees that a society will repeat history without knowledge of it, it is obvious that many lessons can be learned from historical events. Whether or not said event is a particular peace treaty, war, political action, or any other event, all contain significant teachings in some fashion.
