The Arts
page created by Gabi Muangprasert
Traditionally, the arts are defined as the application of creativity and imagination in a way that includes, but is not limited to, the visual arts. The works produced are admired for their aesthetic and emotional significance, although the interpretation of such is entirely subjective. There is no limit to the interpretations that one piece of artwork can produce, but art is not strictly visual. Art encompasses literature, poetry, theater, music, dance, and for some, art stretches much farther than just those. Math and science can be just as much of an art as music; for a biologist, perhaps there is beauty in biological processes, or for a mathematician, perhaps there is beauty in an equation. Every day is there an endless, uncountable exposure to the things that have come about because of art: architecture, signs and billboards, designs for products, anything. In at least every product, some amount of art and creativity collaborated to design it. In some way, art is in everything.

According to IB, the arts are seen as an outlet to become further exposed to cultures in a creative context. It is pertinent to explore and "understand the dynamic and changing nature of the arts, explore the diversity of arts across time, place and cultures, and express themselves with confidence and competence." Interestingly, however, as part of the IB diploma, one does not have to study the arts and can instead replace it with an additional science, societies, or languages class. Perhaps this is to level those who are not necessarily creatively proficient in the arts, and are instead creative in other fields of study.
